When should you use a device shadow instead of direct state sync?

Direct answer

Use a device shadow when devices connect intermittently and apps need separate desired and reported state for configuration drift. Direct sync is simpler for BLE products that are usually near the phone. For a thermostat, the shadow can hold target schedules for later delivery, while BLE-local state remains authoritative for immediate temperature changes.
