How should you split features between companion app and device UI?

Direct answer

Keep safety-critical or latency-sensitive controls on the device when hardware allows it, and use the companion app for setup, history, OTA updates, and account-linked features. Avoid duplicating every setting unless both surfaces share one schema. For a heater, emergency stop belongs on the device, while schedules and firmware updates fit the app.
